My Investment Strategy

Garry Writes, is a free investment strategies email sent three times a week from me, Garry White, the editor of Outstanding Investments.

I am a long termist. Always have been, always will be. I believe that investing is a life-long business, but most share tipsters are geared up for giving short-term advice. This makes their portfolios look good quickly, so I can see why they do it. But that means they miss out on a whole plethora of fantastic opportunities. This is crazy.

I’d like to share a story with you, which sort of defines my investment strategy…

When I first started working in the City in the early 1990s, I was given one piece of advice by an old City gent who had been a stockbroker for more than 50 years. It’s something I have never forgotten.

It would be fair to say that this broker had been around a bit - and his language could only be described as “colourful”. Indeed, some of his views were quite colourful as well, but we shouldn't dwell on that here. Leaving out the expletives, the money shot from our conversation was basically this.

I asked him, out of all the years he had been lunching with clients, proffering advice and making trades, how exactly did people become rich? What was the secret - where could I find the alchemists’ dream? What is the best way to get wealthy? Was day trading the answer? Some unique charting system, perhaps?

Erm, no... It was none of these… His advice was succinct and to the point. He said that people who wanted to become rich should choose the right share and tuck the certificate away in a drawer. Then forget about it. For years and years and years. There’s no exciting system or quick-and-easy fix. You need to buy a good share and then wait for it to rise and rise.

The trick, obviously, is choosing the right share...

It’s a bit like the old surfing analogy of the seventh wave. I don’t know if you have heard about it, but if you remember the Kate Bush’s album Hounds of Love album from the 1980s, the B side was a concept piece based on this principle. Indeed side 2 of the album is actually called The Seventh Wave.

So, this is how the legend goes...

The seventh wave of the seventh series is always the largest. So, when you are on your surfboard you have to position yourself for that one particular wave, because it will carry you the highest and furthest that you could possibly go...

This legend is an allegory of my investment strategy – and I aim to steer you towards the right investment waves in my free newsletter Garry Writes.

So, which sectors do I believe show massive potential in the future and which ones do not? See my Stock Market Sectors to Watch
